The magic and enchantment of Snow Globes are as much a part of Christmas as tinsel, mince pies and an angel on top of the tree. Their invention is credited to Erwin Perzy, an Austrian manufacturer of medical instruments. In 1900, he was trying to improve the design of a candle powered surgical lamp that was filled with water and reflective particles to intensify its brightness.
The effect was said to have reminded him of snowfall, and he built a model featuring a church scene as a prototype. The idea caught on, and by 1905 he was mass producing them in Vienna with his brother Ludwig. his company is still going strong today, where Erwin's grandson, Erwin Perzy III still runs the family business, manufacturing over 200000 snow globes a year with just 30 employees.
