    Description

    T
he artist is Don Dickerman, proprietor of several 1920s/30s
Greenwich Village nightclub restaurants, including the Pirates’ Den, where colorfully outfitted servers staged mock battles for guests. He became nationally known and was a minor celebrity at the time (see last photo depicting Don and the Pirates' Den). Don o
ften dressed as a pirate in private life, owned a Long Island house associated with pirate lore, formed a treasure-hunting club, and spent a small fortune collecting pirate relics. In 1940, he had a small part in Errol Flynn’s pirate movie "The Sea Hawk."
Don also loved to paint, and was
a staff artist on naturalist William Beebe’s West Indies expedition in 1925.
    He created this
painted glass set in 1933 depicting a group of unsavory pirates with weapons. Each piece is hand-painted and signed. The six glasses measure 5 3/8" tall and 3" in diameter. The carafe is 8 1/4" tall and 5" in diameter.
