Description
Gay-Ola soda was a soft drink created by J.C. Wells in 1910. The name of the original company name was known as Gleeola. It was an immediate hit in the Memphis area selling over 40,000 gallons of syrup within a year's time. The company expanded into areas of Tennessee and Alabama, and beyond. The brand was touted as having duplicated the secret formula of Coca Cola.Within the first year, the two bottling plants in Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama were split off to form a new Pepsi:Cola Bottling Company. The Memphis location changed it name to "Gay-Ola Bottling Co.". They were selling 40,000 gallons of syrup per month and soon opened plants in Jacksonville, Florida; Dallas, Texas; & Los Angeles, California, and this franchise in Arkansas.
In 1911, Coca Cola sued Gay-Ola for copyright infringement. Gay-Ola copied Coca Cola's script writing on the bottle and their use of the Diamond on the bottle. These were Coca Cola's copyrights awarded to the Atlanta company years ago. So, Gay-Ola lost this lawsuit and had to start using this block print on their bottles. The company survived until the early 1920's.
This is a beautiful, old straight sided bottle that states, "Gay-Ola" on the shoulder of one side. Underneath the name is, "Bottle Pat'd Dec. 18, 1917, The Improved Cola" with "6 1/2 fl. oz." on the other side. The bottom edge states, "Dixie Bottling Co. Clarendon, Ark.". On the bottom is "G" inside a star, probably the bottle maker. This bottle features the characteristics of the primitive manufacturing process of the day, beautiful internal bubbles, and uneven bottom.
This bottle is nice looking, fairly cloudy, with some wear, with absolutely no chips or cracks, as shown.
