IKAT PANEL from SUMBA, INDONESIAN from the early 20
th
century. This is a Genuine Old and COMPLETE piece (and not a fragment) that is made by joining two pieces vertically from the centre along with FRINGED ENDS. This remarkable textile can be used as a Wall Hanging/ Throw or Tapestry, or even as a Stole or Shawl. , is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dyeing process on the yarns prior to dyeing and hand weaving the fabric.
The textiles of Sumba (an island in eastern Indonesia) represented the means by which the present generation passes on its messages to future generations. The pieces were deeply personal, followed distinct systematic form but showed the individuality of the weaver and the village from which they were produced. Internationally, Sumba's textiles are collected as examples of the highest quality textile design and are found in the major museums of the world as well as the home's of collectors. One hundred years ago the Dutch were already exporting
textiles
from the island
of
Sumba
. These cloths were made not only for export out of Sumba, but also for trade with people from the interior for ritual use, where by custom the process of
ikat
was forbidden.
The identifiable creatures that appear on royal Sumba textiles include cocks or chickens (animals of ritual sacrifice), deer with their spreading horns. Shrimps and lobsters symbolize rebirth—the shrimps because they shed and replace their shells, the LIZARDS because they can regenerate their limbs in a process of renewal are symbolic of a ruler's powers.
